A Russian novelist; born at Ramene in the government of Kostroma, March 20, 1820; died January 1881. His greatest novel is "A Thousand Souls" (1858); he wrote also "The Stormy Sea" (1863), "The Men of 1840" (1868), "In the Whirlpool" (1871). Some of his short stories are in every way admirable, among them "The Wood Demon" and "Pietershik".
