born in 1820, fought at Bull Run and was chief engineer of the Port Royal expedition. He led a division at Secessionville and commanded the Department of the Ohio till 1863. He led a division at Gettysburg and a corps at Rappahannock Station, the Wilderness and Spottsylvania. He repulsed General Early's threatened invasion of Washington in 1864. He commanded at Cedar Creek and led a corps at Petersburg.
