An American preacher and miscellaneous writer; born at Pittsfield, Mass., Jan. 2, 1784; died at Northampton, Mass., July 16, 1868. He became president of Dartmouth University in 1817; was president of Bowdoin College, 1820-39. Of numerous works, both in prose and verse, the best known is "American Biographical and Historical Dictionary" (3d ed., 1857).
