An American soldier and diplomatist; born in New York, 1821. He served in the Civil War, was secretary of legation at Paris, London, St. Petersburg, and minister to Denmark. He has written "Camp, Court, and Siege" (1877), narrating personal adventures and observations during the Civil War, and the siege of Paris and the Commune; "Leisure Hours in Russia" (1883). Died 1900.
