The Walpole Company was formed in 1766. In 1769 the company petitioned for a grant of 2,500,000 acres between 38 and 42 north latitude and east of the Scioto River. August 14, 1772, the grant was finally made by the crown. The Walpole Company was opposed by the Mississippi Company, formed some years later by a body of wealthy Virginia planters.
