An Italian poet and historian of literature; born in Naples, Oct. 27, 1840; died there, Jan. 1, 1886. His life was involved in political turmoil, but he made himself known as a graceful and elegant poet with "Popular Songs of the Southern Provinces", and as an ode-writer of strength and dignity in an "Address to Italy's Queen". In prose he ranks high, as "Purloined[or Usurped] Reputations", a book of literary essays, demonstrates. His "Philological Studies in Dante" is a valuable contribution to our knowledge of the great Florentine.
