Born in 1825, greatly aided the Free-Soil movement. He was clerk of the Superior Court in Boston from 1859 to 1870, and U.S. Consul to Glasgow, Scotland, from 1885 to 1888. He has written novels and lives of Lowell, Longfellow and Whittier.
