December 26, 1776. After retreating across the Delaware, Washington received reinforcements and determined to strike a blow upon the British centre at Trenton. Neither his right wing nor centre was able to cross the river. However, with only 2500 men he crossed the stream filled with floating ice, marched nine miles in a blinding snowstorm and took Trenton by surprise. The commander, Rail, and seventeen of his men were slain. One thousand Hessians were taken prisoners. Only four Americans perished, two killed in action, and two frozen to death.
