A malarial fever, the paroxysms of which recur every other day (every third day, reckoning the day of the paroxysm as the first). It is caused by the sporulation and invasion of new red blood-corpuscles by a protozoan blood-parasite, Plasmodium vivax. In double tertian or quotidian fever, a paroxysm occurs every day, those of the alternate days being similar; it is due to infection by two groups of parasites so that those of one or the other group sporulate every day.
