An American novelist; born in New York, July 11, 1819; died at Highland Falls, N. Y., March 17, 1885. Her books are: "The Wide, Wide World" (1850); "Queechy" (2 vols., 1852); a theological treatise, "The Law and the Testimony" (1853); "The Hills of the Shatemuc" (1856); "Lyrics from the Wide, Wide World"; "The Golden Ladder" (1862); "The Old Helmet" (1863); "Wych Hazel" (1876); and an essay, "American Female Patriotism". Her pen-name was "Elizabeth Wetherell".
