Some authors have used this word synonymously with nightmare. Others mean by it a female phantom, with which a man in his sleep may believe he has intercourse; - as Incubus has been applied to the male phantom, with which a female may dream she is similarly situate.

Besides medical works, Scripture paraphrases, satirical verse, he wrote Popian couplets "Prince Arthur, a Heroic Poem"(1695), and voluminous religious epic, "The Creation"(1712), very successful much praised then, but not now read.
