A rare disease, characterized by local pain, swelling, and heat, which sometimes terminates by suppuration. It generally affects the capsule-Epispleni'tis, Perispleni'tis-and must be treated like other inflammations.

Inflammation of the spleen, usually pyaemic in origin; characterized by local pain, particularly when the peritoneum is involved, and by enlargement of the organ, which becomes fluctuant if much pus forms. Spodogenous s., s. produced by the arrest in the spleen of foreign particles and especially fragments of tissue set free by the disintegration of other organs and circulating in the blood.
