A parasomnia characterized by a partial arousal that occurs during stage IV of non-REM sleep. Affected individuals exhibit semipurposeful behaviors such as ambulation and are difficult to fully awaken. Children are primarily affected, with a peak age range of 4-6 years.

Somnambulist.

1. A sleep disorder in which a person walks, writes, or performs other complex acts automatically while in a condition of somnolence, having no recollection, on awaking, of what he has done. 2. A condition in which one's mental processes are conducted in a more or less unusual or odd way, and in which one seems confused and almost as if asleep.

A condition of the brain which occasions the individual to execute, during sleep, some of those actions that commonly take place when awake. The causes of somnambulism are very obscure; and the principal indication of treatment is, - so to arrange the bedchamber of the somnambulist, that he cannot get out of it during sleep; and to avoid suppers, as well as all bodily and mental excitement.
