A gregarious American rodent which unites some of the characteristics of the beaver with those of the squirrel family and the prairie-dog. It is remarkable for its rootless molars. It is about the size of a muskrat, and the reddish-brown skin which covers its plump heavy body is much used by the Indians as an article of dress.
