A hardy grain crop, Secale cereale, grown in northern climates. It is the most frequent host to ergot (CLAVICEPS), the toxic fungus. Its hybrid with wheat is triticale, another grain.

Rye is chiefly used as an article of diet, particularly in the northern parts of Europe, where a spirit is also extracted from it. The grain is disposed to acescency: and hence its internal use at first generally produces a laxative effect.
