A great French military engineer; born at St. Leger de Foucher Burgundy, May 15, 1633; died at Paris, March 30, 1707. He published nothing during his life, but since his death some of his MSS. have been printed at various times; among them: "Notes for Instruction in the Conduct of Sieges and the Defense of Places" (1740); "Marshal de Vauban's Hours of Idleness" (3 vols., 1842); "Military Works" (3 vols., 1793); "Attack and Siege of Strong Places".
