An English hymnwriter; born at Great Harlow, Essex, Feb. 22, 1805; died August 1848. In 1834 she was married to William Bridges Adams, a noted inventor. She was the author of "Vivia Perpetua", a dramatic poem (London, 1841); and of many lyrics and hymns, the most popular of which is "Nearer, My God, to Thee" (1860).
