A noted American journalist; born at Springfield, Mass., Feb. 9, 1826; died there, Jan. 16, 1878. He was editor and proprietor of the Springfield Republican (1844-78). He wrote: "Across the Continent" (1865); "The Switzerland of America" (1869); "Our New West" (1869); etc. As one of the most able journalists in a land of journalism, his fame is both great and enduring.
