A German novelist; born at Prague, March 8, 1825. His first novel, "Gabriel" (1852; 2d ed. 1875), published anonymously, met with considerable success. His other more important works have been: "Mirror of the Present" (3 vols., 1875); "Prague Ghetto Pictures" (1886), containing three short stories; "The Old Grenadier", "The Faithful Old", "The Life Saver and Other Tales"; "Judith Lorach".
