Acts xxvii. 40. Ships were steered anciently-(?) up to the fourteenth century, as in some countries in modern times also -not by hinged rudders, but by two paddles, one on each quarter; these, when not used, were lifted out of the water and secured by lashings, or rudder-bands. (Cf. Eur.,Hel., 1536; and so in the Bayeux Tapestry.)
