(1710-1788), came to America in 1756 as major of British troops. He commanded a brigade at the battle of Long Island. He was appointed royal Governor of New York in 1779.
(1742-1814), held the Cherokee Indians in check during the Revolution. He founded settlements on the Cumberland River in 1779. He defeated the designs of the half-breed McGillivray (q. v.) for twelve years.
