An American historian and divine; born in Fayette County, Pa., Oct. 6, 1798; died at Yonkers, N. Y., March 15, 1863. Among his works were: "History of the Waldenses, Albigenses, and Vaudois"; "History of the Temperance Societies" (1836); "Religion in America" (1844); etc. He was corresponding secretary of the American and Foreign Christian Union (1849-55, 1861-63).
