An illustrious French philosopher; born at La Haye, Touraine, March 31, 1596; died at Stockholm, Feb.11, 1650. His works comprise: "Discourse on Method" (1637); "Meditations in Elementary Philosophy"; "Philosophical Beginnings"; "Dioptrique"; "Meteors"; "Geometry"; "Letters to the Princess Elizabeth"; and many controversial amplifications of his doctrines, among them "Treatise on the Passions" (1649).
