The word is often used synonymously with itching. Willan and Bateman use the term for a genus of cutaneous diseases, the characteristic symptoms of which are a severe itching, accompanied by an eruption of papulae of nearly the same colour as the adjoining cuticle; Cuesmos, Scabies paputiform'is, Exor'mia pruri'go. It affects the whole surface of the skin, under three varieties of form; - the P. mitis, P. formi'cans, P. seni'lis, &c., as well as some parts of the body, as the P. pod'icis, and P. puden'di mulie'bris, Puden'dagra pru'riens, Pruri'tus vulvae, (F.) Prurit de la vulve.
