(1815-1887), was a Judge of the Vermont Supreme Court from 1848 to 1860 and Chief Justice from 1860 to 1865. He represented Vermont in the U. S. Senate as a Republican from 1865 to 1867 and in the House from 1867 to 1875. He was chairman of the committees to investigate the Ku-Klux Klan outrages and the Credit Mobilier transactions.
