-
An instrument for measuring the changes in volume in an organ. In principal it consists of a rigid box containing water or air which encloses the organ and is closed everywhere except at one point through which communication is made with a recording apparatus. It is used chiefly in determination of the changes in volume of the arm or hand, due to variations in the blood supply. Similar instruments for other organs are sometimes given special names, that for the kidney or spleen is an oncometer, that for the heart a cardiometer, etc. [Gr.]
