A muscle, situate at the posterior part of the leg. It is long, thin, and narrow. Above, it is attached to the posterior part of the external condyle of the os femoris: below, it terminates by a long tendon, which is attached to the posterior and inner part of the calcaneum. This muscle extends the leg on the foot, and conversely. It can, also, assist in the flexion of the leg on the thigh.
