An Alexandrine Jewish philosopher; born at Alexandria about 20 B. C. About the year 40, in his old age, he went to Rome at the head of a Jewish embassy, to persuade the emperor Caligula to exempt the Jews from the obligation of paying the emperor divine honors; a full account of this mission is given in Philo's extant work "On the Embassy to Caius". We have still many of his writings, or considerable fragments of them; an edition of them has been published (8 vols., 1851-54).
