An American controversialist and sermonist; born in Virginia, Sept. 1, 1785; died Sept. 25, 1872. He was a Methodist clergyman, of great power and eccentricity, and preached, it is said, fully 15,000 sermons. He published "A Controversy with the Devil"; "Autobiography of a Backwoods Preacher"; "Fifty Years a Presiding Elder".
