(1653-1720), born in England, was a clergyman in Salem, Mass., from 1689 to 1696. In 1692 his daughter and niece accused Tituba, a slave, of bewitching them. Mr. Parris beat Tituba until she confessed. The delusion spread, and during the horrors of the " Salem witchcraft," here inaugurated, nineteen persons were hanged. He afterward acknowledged his error.
