A Frankish poet; born near Weissenburg in Alsace; studied at Fulda under Hrabanus Maurus (822-884), and also under Salomon I., bishop of Constance (839-871); then went back to the Benedictine Monastery in Weissenburg, where he wrote his famous "Evangilienbuch", a paraphrase in verse of the Gospels, dedicated about 865 to (King) Louis the German, and to Archbishop Luitoert of Mentz. It is one of the most valuable documents of the Old High German period.
