A small, flat, triangular muscle, situate in the substance of the thenar eminence. It is attached, on the one hand, to the anterior annular ligament of the carpus and to the trapezium; and on the other, to the whole of the outer margin of the first metacarpal bone. This muscle impresses on the first bone of the metacarpus a movement of rotation, which opposes the thumb to the other fingers.
