An Italian saint and religious writer; born in Sienna, Italy, 1347; died 1380. Her letters and treatises are greatly admired. She is styled "the seraphic virgin" on account of her insight into spiritual things. A new edition of her "Writings", dictated to her secretary by the saint in moments of ecstasy, appeared in 1896.
