born in 1827, was associate editor of the North American Review from 1864 to 1868. He has written "Considerations on Some Recent Social Theories" and "'Historical Studies of Church Building in the Middle Ages;" has translated Dante, and edited the correspondence of Carlyle with Emerson and that of Lowell. He is professor of the fine arts in Harvard University.
