one of the Five Nations of the Iroquois. The English early secured their friendship, and during the French and Indian Wars they proved valuable allies of the colonists. In the Revolutionary War the tribe under Brant carried on hostilities against the Americans. In 1784 the Mohawks retired to Upper Canada.
