A row of s's formed on each side of the dorsal ridges of the embryo by the transverse cleavage of the protovertebral column of the mesoblast, and ultimately developed into the spinal ganglia, permanent vertebrae, and muscular and dermal plates. They were formerly called primordial vertebrae and protovertebrae.
