Membranous productions, which form on all the free natural surfaces, and on every free accidental surface, are so called. They are, in general, produced by the exudation of a fibrinous matter, susceptible of organization, which takes place in consequence of inflammation of the various tissues. These accidental membranes occur on the skin after the application of a blister; on mucous surfaces, as in croup; on the parietes of inflamed veins and arteries, &c. The cicatrices of wounds are formed of them.
