An American naval officer, famous in science; born in Spottsylvania County, Va., Jan. 14, 1806; died in Lexington, Va., Feb. 1, 1873. His most distinguished work is "Physical Geography of the Sea" (1855; revised ed. 1860); he was also author of treatises on navigation, astronomy, and meteorology.
