Memphis, TN

  • was laid out as a village in 1820 and incorporated 1831. During the Civil War it early held by Confederates with fleet of eight vessels under Commodore Montgomery. rendered defenceless captured Federals June 6, 1862. Davis left Fort Pillow 4, nine Union vessels, proceeded at once to Memphis, before which Confederate lay. An attack upon these ships immediately begun. Four ram-boats commander, Ellet, joined did much toward destroying fleet. Several had their boilers shot through crews scalded death. utterly demolished. 1870-80 city ravaged yellow fever.
