A German historian; born at Munich, Aug. 1, 1748; died there, March 15, 1829. He was professor of poetry at Landshut, 1774; and of rhetoric at Munich, 1776; literary censor, 1776; clerical senator, 1786; raised to the nobility, 1813. He did much for the elevation of the German language. His statue was erected at Munich in 1854. He wrote "History of Bavaria" (2 vols., 1785); "Contribution to the National History, Geography, Statistics, and Agriculture" (10 vols., 1785-1817); etc.
