This name has been given to a number of instruments of different shapes and sizes, which are used in the operation for the stone, to cut the neck or body of the bladder. They ought, with more propriety, to be called Cystotomes. The Lithotome Cache of Frere Come is the most known, and is still occasionally used. It is composed of a handle, and a flattened sheath, slightly curved: in this there is a cutting blade, which can be forced out, by pressing upon a bascule or lever, to any extent that may be wished by the operator. A Double Lithotome was used by Dupuytren in his bilateral operation. See Lithotomy.
