A French biographer and historical writer; born in Bourdeilles, Dordogne, Dec. 13, 1826. He is skillful, accurate, and readable, as a miscellaneous biographical writer; and his best studies, "Washington and the Formation of the Republic of the United States of America" (1888), "Alexander the Great" (1889), and "The Battle of Sedan" (1873), are popular.
