An American essayist and literary critic; born in New York, Aug. 8, 1843. Devoting his earlier years to mercantile pursuits, he at length became dramatic critic of the New York Evening Mail. He has edited, since 1886, Literary Notes in Harper's Magazine. His publications are well known under the titles "I'lays and Players"; "Edwin Booth"; "Literary Landmarks"; and essays on London, Edinburgh, Jerusalem, Venice, Florence, and Rome. Died at Princeton, N. J., June 10, 1904.
