An American educator, editor, and writer of juvenile literature; born at Cairo, N. Y., Jan. 4, 1807; died in New York city, Aug. 30, 1885. During his career he was professor of Latin, rhetoric, and political economy at Williams College, and of mental and moral philosophy at Lafayette College. He was president of Jefferson College, Cannonsburg, Pa., from 1857 to 1862, and principal of the Normal School at Albany, N. Y., from 1867 to 1881. He was also editor of the New York Observer. Besides books for young people he wrote: "Citizens' Manual"; "Christian Ethics" (1866); "Science of Government" (1866); "Elements of Intellectual Philosophy" (1866).
