A Czech novelist and dramatist; born at Prague, Feb. 9, 1812. Several of his dramas have been successful: for instance, "Monika" (1847); "Ziska's Death" (1850); "Smirick" (1881); "Primator" (1883). He has also made excellent translations from the dramatic works of Shakespeare, Goethe, Schiller, etc., and written novels. He was an actor, very successful in tragic roles, especially Shakespearean.
