An Austrian astronomer; born at Bischofsteinitz in Bohemia, March 13, 1781; died Nov. 30, 1840. By his writings and public lectures he contributed largely to the diffusion of astronomical knowledge in Austria. His chief works are :"Theoretic and Practical Astronomy" (2 vols., 1821); "Wonders of the Heavens" (1834; 8th ed. 1894); "Atlas of the Starry Heavens" (1838; 3d ed. 1870).
