An American physician and miscellaneous writer; born in Baltimore, Md., April 4, 1825; died on February 26, 1906. In 1870 he settled in New York; subsequently was connected with the staff of the Century Dictionary. Among his writings are: "The Golden Dagon; or, Up and Down the Irrawaddi" (1853); "The New and the Old; or, California and India in Romantic Aspects" (1859); "After his Kind, by John Coventry", a novel (1886); and "Stonewall Jackson's Way", which was one of the most popular ballads of the Civil War.
