An English dramatist; born at Boston, Lincolnshire, Jan. 30, 1819; died in London, Jan. 5, 1890. He was one of a group of English mystics. Among his dramas were: "The Patrician's Daughter" (1842); "Donna Diana" (1863), his best play; "The Favorite of Fortune" (1866); etc. He wrote also "Our Recent Actors" (1888), a valuable work; a novel; two collections of short stories; and a number of poems,- among the latter "The Death-Ride at Balaklava" (1854), which became very popular.
