These organs are of a fibro-cartilaginous nature; sections of a cylinder; flexible; whitish; resisting; and situate between the bodies of the vertebrae, - from the space between the second and third as far as that between the last vertebra and sacrum. Their form is accommodated to that of the vertebra with which they are in connexion; so that, in the neck and loins, they are oval, whilst in the dorsal region they are nearly circular.
