was born in 1833. He served in the Civil War as a colonel. In 1866 he was appointed Attorney-General of Illinois. He was counsel for the defence for the " Star route " conspirators, who were acquitted in 1883. He is a popular Republican campaign orator. He is well known for his attacks upon the Christian religion.
